The Power of Coherence in Leadership

“Leadership is not being in charge. It is about taking care of those in your charge.” [Simon Sinek]

In our fifth post exploring the Escentia 6C framework for leading with intention, we discuss leadership coherence. By embracing coherence through intentional energy management, boundary-setting, and connection, leaders create a foundation for sustainability—not just for themselves, but for their entire teams. Click to catch up on the other essential leadership qualities of  Clarity, Courage, Congruence and Connection.

Defining Leadership Coherence

Coherence in leadership is about maintaining mental and emotional stability to ensure consistent, sustainable effectiveness. While we may excel for a day, a month, or even six months, true sustainability demands intentional leadership every single day. This begins with managing our energy, extends to fostering coherence in our teams, and evolves through connection and openness to growth.

Practical Steps to Enhance Leadership Coherence

  1. Energy Management Starts with the Self: Recognize that no one else is responsible for our energy—we own our battery. Prioritise intentional practices that recharge and stabilise your mental, emotional, and physical energy.
  2. Intentional Energy Leadership: Leadership coherence involves ensuring our teams see us walk our talk. Model the behaviours you expect, particularly when managing energy and stress levels.
  3. Defining Boundaries and Non-Negotiables: Understand your personal boundaries and identify non-negotiables. This clarity helps you maintain balance and coherence.Similarly, empower your team to do the same to foster a culture of mutual respect and resilience.
  4. Encourage Recharge and Work-Free Vacations: Advocate for work-free vacations and opportunities which allow team members to recharge. Model this behaviour yourself to set an example to the team.
  5. Proactively Assess Mindsets and Positivity: Regularly evaluate your own positivity and mental stories and practice gratitude every day. Extend this to your team, ensuring an environment of constructive and positive narratives.
  6. Harness the Power of Connection: Leadership is not a solo journey; connection is essential. Cultivate meaningful relationships within your team and across your networks to draw on collective strength and perspective.
  7. Stay Open to New Ways of Thinking and Being: Sustainable leadership requires continuous evolution. Keep your mind open to fresh ideas, innovative approaches, and different perspectives that challenge and inspire growth.
